OMG, thank you Vickie. I don't sit on my tail and chart either. Nurse's aides do just that - they assist the nurse with patient care. Depending on that facility and floor you work in, the duties can vary quite a bit. I thought the nurse's job looked pretty easy too when I worked as a CNA...little did I know. I had no idea about what really went on and how far their responsibilities and liabilities stretched.
Oh - and I can pretty much guarantee nurse aides do NOT start IVs.

Do you mean a CNA - certified nurse's aide? They do basic care - like help patients to shower, eat, change beds, empty urinals, etc.
Nurse techs are able to start I.V.'s, insert foley catheters, basic care only. The pay is much lower than an LVN or RN and is almost equivalent to a nurse assistant.
CNA - Certified Nursing Assistant.
While the nurses sit on their tails and chart we have to assist patients with their ADL's ( activities of daily living ) we are also responsible for noting any changes in the patients condition. We also record intakes and outputs, meal records and many other things. We are the backbone of any hospital, assisted living or nursing home. We so all the work and get none of te glory.
as a nurse of 16 years who most certainly does NOT sit on her tail for 12 hours at night nurse techs in our state help w/baths, weights, vital signs, feeding, bathing, turning every two hours those that are total care and help answer call lights that do not involve medication or IVs and are an invaluable part of TEAMWORK...i notice some criticism of nurses in this forum and I wonder if some people are just a little jealous..or maybe not motivated enough to go to school, and get THEIR license...i speak today having come off 6 12 hour shifts in a row and I did very little SITTING
