Diet plays a HUGE role in IBS. Try eliminating problematic foods from your diet. Everyone is different, and can have problems with a variety of foods, but dairy, wheat, corn, tomatoes, and foods high in fat are all common distress foods for IBS.
The starchy foods are constipating, and the corn and tomatoes are inflammatory foods which can cause flare up of IBS.
Dairy causes constipation for many people with IBS. Bananas and peanut butter are also both constipating foods.
Try eating fresh fruit, and veggies. Eat bran, oat and rice flours instead of wheat. Drink lots and lots of water - this will help to keep things moving. You can also try benefiber in hot water with some lemon.
Best of luck to you.
Blood sugar imbalances will lead to hormonal imbalances that can overwork your adrenal glands, which produce your stress hormones. Overworked adrenals can disrupt thyroid function and alters your metabolism and lead to weight gain and fatigue. Too much stress can disturb digestion and lead to bloating, gas, reflux and irritable bowel. This can cause poor absorption and lead to fatigue, headaches, acne, and constipation. Stress will disturb insulin sensitivity and cause blood sugar imbalances associated with cravings, mood swings, and irritability. Missed meals or poor dietary choices can overwork your adrenal glands. Prolonged stress will steal progesterone and disturb that estrogen to progesterone balance associated with depression, PMS, hot flashes, and loss of libido ….and the cycle goes on.
These three issues can cause such a cycle that unless you address all three areas you may never get to the root cause and be able to fully restore normal metabolic function.
I highly suggest you consult a nutritionist to work out any problems in your diet that may be contributing and then perhaps get started on a relaxation program. If it is hard for you to learn to relax, then perhaps a monthly massage will help get you started on the right track!
I also recommend reading any of Dr. Andrew Weil's books because they address all of the above issues. He has audio books too, which I find much easier!
I hope this helps and good luck.
I was going to write an answer but this quote was better:
"The nervous system is very sensitive to stress. Constipation may be a direct result of changes in the nervous system during stress. Normal bowel movements are a result of complicated nervous system signals. Too much stress can cause an interruption of these signals that will affect many parts of the digestive tract. It can slow the intestinal movements that result in bowel movements.
Preventing Stress-Related Constipation
If you have constipation as a result of stress, there are many options that you can choose to help prevent this problem.
Exercise can be a great stress-reliever and has the added benefit of promoting healthy digestion. It may seem like just one more thing to add to your schedule, but it will be worth it.
Planning meals ahead of time can help with some constipation problems. Instead of skipping meals, keep healthy snacks on hand for busy days.
If you have to eat on the run, choose options with healthier meals. Many fast food restaurants are offering healthy options that include lean meat and vegetables.
Keep water with you at all times. If you have a bottle of water on your desk or in the car, you’ll be more likely to stay hydrated.
If you’re suffering from severe symptoms of constipation as a result of stress, it’s a good idea to talk to your healthcare provider. Together you can come up with a solution to improve both your physical health and your mental health."
Try some peppermint oil capsule. Availiable over the counter in a chemist or prescribed by your GP
