i have a theory on that:

Farts smell based on the richness of what you eat. The better food (for your body) you eat, the smellier the fart is. Notice some farts do not smell at all?

because it is a rush of air that has formed in your alimentary canal and rushes through a tube lined with fecal matter.

Actually a fart's smell is more from the amount of sulfur digesting bacteria in the gut than the methane gas.

The methane just makes it flammable.

Fart smell due to presence of "methane". Any organic matter when decomposes releases this gas___"CH3". Remember basic chemistry. It also comes from plants, soil, animal manure. In many countries methane gas from animal manure is collected and filled in cylinders for fuel for electric generators, air-conditioners or stoves also its a cheap replacement of fossil fuel( regular gas at the pump) for cars and trucks. So, don't light a match when someone just farted.
