Is constant swimming in Chlorine water bad for you?

Question:
I have begun water therapy by swimming at the Y. They seem to use a lot of chlorine. Does chlorine have long term health affects?

I always shower afterwards, but my eyes will still sting all night.

Someone on another post said that excess showering in chlorinated tap water causes hardening of the arteries.... if that is true, then imagine what chlorine pools might do?!

I have arthritis & fibromyalgia so water exercise is the best for me since it's non weight bearing.

Answers:
Whomever told you about the hardening of the arteries thing is loopy! Chlorine is VERY hard on the eyes and your problem will probably et worse. Places like the YMCA HAVE to use a great deal of chlorine to kill bacteria and those places are loaded with an overabundance of chlorine. Sorry, but if you are allergic (itchy eyes will usually get itchier) you may be out of luck. Can you keep your head out of the water?
