What is the best way to stop a bloody nose?

Some of you have it mostly right. Most importantly, stay calm. You should immediately pinch the soft part of the nose...just below where the bones end, and do this firmly for at least five minutes...no peaking! Lean forward...this keeps the clot in your nose instead of letting it fall back...most people don't choke on them, but swallowing blood will often get a person nauseated and cause vomiting, which can trigger a re-start of the bleed. Ice can be applied, but this is secondary to direct pressure, which is most important.
If you have Afrin or Neosynephrine around the house, you can spray this into the bleeding side of the nose. If you aren't sure which side, spray both. These sprays cause constriction of blood vessels and can help control a small bleed.
Once the bleeding stops, you should coat the inside of both nostrils with an antibiotic ointment such as Bactroban (my favorite) or any of the over the coutner, petrolium based ointments. Do this for at least a week and during dry times to avoid recurrence.
If the bleed is brisk, doesn't stop with pressure, or if you have other medical problems (heart disease, hypertension, diabetes), you should seek ER medical attention immediately (while still applying pressure).
Don't drive yourself to the ER, have a spouse/friend or call emergency services.
If you have repeat nosebleeds (>1/wk) you should see your doctor about cauterization and investigations to rule out other causes (high blood pressure, tumor, etc).
Nosebleeds are very common, but frequent or brisk nosebleeds are not and can be worrisome.
Be well.

Lean forward and hold the top of your nose. DO NOT LEAN BACKWARDS!!!
Lean your head forward and pinch your nostrils together right where your nose goes from soft cartilage to hard bone. Don't lean back or you'll choke on the blood. Nosebleeds usually aren't serious but if it bleeds for more than 45 minutes, seek medical attention.
Pinch it at the top of the bridge.
a tampon?
Always keep your head down instead of throwing it back, because you could choke on your blood. Pinch your nose with 2 fingers as hard as you can for a few minutes and it should stop.

Tilt your head back get a paper towel and clot it is will or should stop on its own. If it doesn't then you should call the doctor. You don't choke on your own blood that has never happened to me before that is just crazy talk if you lean forward then the blood will get everywhere.
actually putting an ice pack at the top of your nose there helps a lot....i'm not exactly sure what it does but my coworker who's studying to be an EMT helped me out by telling me that tip once.
Punch them before they can punch you! Boxing lessons would help. If its just a now and then thing, and no one is punching you - TP stuck in the offending nostril should do the trick, if its happens a lot go see a doc. good luck with the boxing lessons! Dave
Lean forward, and pinch the nose as close to the base (where you can feel the skull) as possible, but where the nostrils still close.
If bleeding continues, wrap some ice in a towel that you won't mind getting soiled, and apply direct pressure with the icepack on as much of the nose as possible. (The cold helps close the capillaries and stop the bleeding)
As mentioned in another post, if the bleeding doesn't stop within 30-45 minutes, go to the Emergency Room.
If you don't like the person (or think they can handle the pain) or you suspect a fracture, squeeze their nose as hard as possible at the base and pull down the bridge of the nose, allowing the nose to slide between your fingers. If it looks like their nose is "out of joint", they may have a fractured nose, and a trip to the Emergency Room is likely necessary.
P.S. You'll never forget the your first "crunch" after resetting someone's nose.
The best way is to pinch the nose and lean forward, be sure to place and ice pack or ice on the back of the neck. It will slow the bleeding down.
along with leaning forward, pinching ur nostrills just near ur forehead, putting ice packs, there is one old remedy, for treating this problem.that is keeping a slice of onion on the head, and if possible inhaling the smell of the onion.
