Employees should enter as students. And work the way up as students with practical and theoretical training for period of say 4 years approx with reasonable pay.
Increase pay for Nurses and benefits
Introduce nurses training into the highschool and junior highschool curricula or/and
provide housing benefits for nurses, combined with a contract work package for free training

Other Answers:
better pay and benefits. same with the rest of the medical field.

Training, schools are backed up. Then people get in the field and they change carreers because of only salary and burn out.

Could allow EMTs and Paramedics to do more, but they get paid less then garbage men.

It shocks me that this country would allow the people that could be saving your lives in an emergency to make the same amount of money as someone working at McDonald's or Burger King.

Better pay, on-site child care, good benefits, shorter shifts or smaller patient/nurse ratios. Solid support from Administration would be nice, too, but might be asking a little too much! I believe nurses should be paid more and have better incentives. It's not just anyone who can do what they have to do and not complain. Plus they usually work in a facility that is open 24hr/day 365dys/year. Now President Bush mandated 40hr week before overtime not just after working 8hrs. I'd like to see him try it.

Hire Condoleesa Rice wannabees.

I agree, most people shy away from this profession because of the salary and inflexible scheduling which usually means very LONG hours. If someone wants to go and work themselves to death, they want to make a decent wage doing it!
