6 year old with cough and asthma-what makes it stop?

Question:
My son gets asthma due to colds/allergies. He has allergy medications, nebulizer medications and I've tried over the counter cough syrups. He always gets 1 or 2 nights with an unstoppable dry cough that is so bad it makes his eyes purple. Sometimes it becomes a croup-like cough. Nothing stops it, and it usually passes in a day or two. The doctor is useless, he says prevention is the only answer. I just want him to have some relief so he can rest. Anything natural or over the counter?

Answers:
beleive it or not i just read new research about music therapy and asthma - if you have a drum and beat it in a slow rythmic beat it helps controll breathing and relaxes the person

Go To DOCTOR! Coffee has been known to open bronchial tubes. My daughter had asthma as a child and it helped ease her breathing at times. Never tried if for a cough though. You do however, have to weigh the benefits against the possibility that he may be up all night from the caffeine.

Take him to see his pediatrician! He'll probably give him a prescription and maybe ask you to get a humidifier. Some children grow out of it, while others have asthma for life.

Find another doctor and get a second opinion. You don't want to mess with asthma. Take him to the ER or med center if you have to at least maybe you will get some answers and your son will get relief.

Well my son has the same problem and his asthma is real severe. He gets flovent and albuterol. The flovent is the pump and the albuterol is the nebilizer. He also gets pulmicort with the nebulizer but if he is coughing real bad I will give him about 2 or 3 littles tubes of the albuterol on the nebulizer. That usually works to help him breathe better. Hope this helps and I feel your pain and worry. If you or someone smoke around or in the home would cause it, wall to wall carpet(dust mites), pets and try to keep the area CLEAN helps as well the cleaning product use and cold air hitting their face. And try taking an asthma class to get to know it better.

My 2 kids always had hacking cough @ night due to asthma.. I recently started them on xopenex & pulmecort. seems to help them. But seriously think of the dangers of otc remedies. asthma & otc meds don't mix well, just makes things worse. Consult a 2nd pediatrician.
