I'm overweight using the Body Mass Index. I play sport and can sprint without feeling any strain. Any issues?

I read an article in Men's Health magazine (it could have been men' Fitness) that said BMI is not a helpful tool to determine whether you are under/over weight if you are sporty and have more than average muscle mass. It then went on to say that a lot of professional athletes and sportsmen (it gave a load of examples but I can't remember any) are classed as overweight according to their BMI - so you are in good company!
BMI is only good for the average little/no exercise Joe Bloggs rather than people who train. Body fat % measurement is probably a better indication for you.

There U go that might help.
It depends how far you are over. Your joints will be the first issue to keep in mind. If you are exercising regularly then that's just great! Wish I could Sprint without strain! Mind you, even when I was a skinny bird I struggled with running. I think I am allergic to it!
BMI was devised for comparing the body mass of the "average" body. If you have a larger build with more muscle mass, you will tend to slide towards the heavier side on the BMI chart, since muscle is denser than fat and thus weigh more by volume.
See your GP, and see what he/she thinks.
I believe you are a better judge of whether you are overweight or not. the BMI is a good way to gage your health, but don't totally rely on it. soemtimes, people could be vary healthy and just weight more than others because of their bone structure. I would ask a health perfessional about measuring your body fat instead. that may help out better.
well may be u are not overweight it just might be baby fat which may shed with time.but if u feel so u must be mentally fit and have full control on what u are taking in etc..
GOOD LUCK!!
The body mass index is FLAWED! even the BMI who insist GP's use it agree it doesn not take account of the fact that muscle is 2* heavier than Fat and 100* better for you! according to it all bodybuilders are OBESE and need to lose FAT! even if their body fat is only 4%.
the best indications of wether you are overweight is your umbilicus waist measurement (around your belly button) this should be tbetween 30 and 36 inches for normal people. of body fat % using proper calibrated scales where the ideal hyper fit level is 11 to 15% for men and 15 to 20% for women, average health is shown by levesl 5% higher BMI does not encompass all variables. There is really one accurate way to measure overweight (as in fat) called hydrostatic body fat exam where you lie in a pool of water. Please consult the underlying sources to get information about the procedure and where you can get it done. You will need to register at a facility to get such an exam, but it should not be an expensive or time consuming process. If you are heavily built, but not fat there is such a theory that it will affect your joints. For that you may want to consult a physician.
