5.5-6 hours is enough for me. At past I beleived that 8 hour neccessary but it was not true. 8 hours is 1/3 of my life. And 6 hours is 1/4 of my life. So I earned 1/12 (approxiamately 5 years) of my life. I would decrease it to 4 hour. So I will live 10 years more:)

A lot depends on the individual's needs. Some can get away with as little as four, others need up to 12.
6-8 hours is a good benchmark.
I prefer 8 to 10, but I found out when my daughter was born I learned I can function on a half an hour for three days.

i read about it in the Times magazine last year, as according to sleep researchers, there isn't a unified best sleep interval for all people, cause it depends on the individual, but most commonly it's 8 hours, to find out about yourself, try this exercise:
Fix your go to bed time and set your alarm to a different wake up timing for a week, try 10 hours at first then 8 then 7 but don't go less than 6 (although some people only need 4), take small notes on whether you are tired or not each time you wake up, the best sleep interval for you is the one that will leave you waking up feeling refreshed and not tired, not over slept. voila!
trust me i tried it, it works! mine is 7 hours.
