how to fight depression?

Wow, what a lot of well-meaning but stupid answers.
Depression has a lot of causative factors, but that's not really important at the moment. What the person neglected to think of when she it would pass was that one way it "passes" is when the person commits suicide.
First off, understand that what you have is real, and that people who don't understand it don't have it. It's like a white person telling a black person to "just get over" feeling discriminated against.
Anyway, depression is chemical, but many of the ways to overcome are not. Exercise is a great way to counter depression's effects, but some people dig themselves further into a hole by biting off more than they can chew. So start by walking, even if just to the mailbox, every day.
It doesn't really matter how far or fast you go. The key is to do it regularly. Moving your body, as one person pointed out, releases chemical that will help.
Also, if you feel overwhelmed by the events in your life, try to find someone to talk to. When you're depressed, it often just feels like too much trouble, or that no one wants to listen to you. Often times we make that so by constant complaining, until our friends stop inquiring into our lives.
If you have insurance or can find it affordably, counseling is a great way to get some perspective. An experienced counselor has helped lots of people in your situation, and can help you make it back to your old self.
Lastly, take depression seriously. It's not you, but rather a condition you have. It can ruin or end your life if it's not treated, so decide to fight it, using the help outlined above. There's no shame in getting help, or making small steps. After all, is there any shame in doing the same if someone has diabetes or cancer?
Good luck, and you can make it through this.
