Dyalisis Question?
Question:
Answers:
If it has only been a week and was drug induced, then there may be a chance that the damage to the kidneys was temporary. The body has an amazing ability to heal itself. A person with acute kidney failure such as your cousin has a much better chance of regaining kidney function than someone that has chronic renal failure that gets progressively worse until dialysis is required. A nephrologist would be much better able to know - and sometimes all they can tell you at this early stage is that it is a waiting game to see how he progresses.
Other Answers:
no, transplant is the only way he can get off dialysis
Yes, sometimes dialysis can reverse the kidney damage. This is especially true if it was drug induced, dehydration induced, etc... However, the longer he is on dialysis the less likely that his kidneys will return to normal without a transplant.
It all depends on why he is on dialysis in the first place. Is his condition caused by something that can be reversed?
Most of the time, it is permanent. Is he a diabetic? That is a leading cause of renal disfunction.
Good luck to your cousin. It was very nice of you to look for online help for him...you're a good friend and cousin!
they tried taking my dad off but he had to start again. yes some people can. Your cousin can be put on kidney teansplant list if he needs a new one, and his health will alow it to be done.
it depends on the extent of the damage. dialysis is only temporary and i know it can drastically change someone's quality of life. your cousin really needs a transplant, but you probably know all that already. has the family been tested to see if anyone is an eligible donor? speak to your doctor or a health specialist to find out what you need to know- it would be more reliable than on a public question/answer site.
it could you got to stay positive there is more chance they will want a donor
