Why do some people have trouble swallowing pills?

I have this problem. For me, I have a fear of choking. That's why I have a problem- I feel like I'm going to choke on pills. I realize it's mostly in my head, but (like any such fear), it's hard to get over it.

You know, i don't know. My wife has trouble, she has a fear of choking i guess, i do know people like that.
My son does. He tries to take them and gags. I can only take them if I have something to wash them down with.
Its mostly all in your head. I had trouble because i prepared my mind thinking, this is a big pill and i have to swallow hard. But i had my mind into training not to think about it and i ve havent had problems since.
pills u have to swallow whole and food u chew... so u want to chew the pill but u cant!
i think it is a misconception that people have to tilt their heads back in order to swallow the pill better. for me however i found out that it was the opposite and i could only swallow pills when i time the gulp with a downward nod of my head.
THE MUSCLES IN EACH PERSON'S ESOPHAGUS (THROAT) ARE THE SAME, YET DIFFERENT FOR EACH. FOR SOME THESE MUSCLES DO NOT STRETCH OUT AS MUCH, THUS CAUSING THEM PROBLEMS SWALLOWING.
ALSO IF OTHER PROBLEMS ARE PRESENT. THE PERSON COULD HAVE ACID REFLUX AND NOT KNOW IT.
Fear of gagging on them.
Until I was 14, my parents always got my prescriptions in liquid form. As a teen I needed to hide a pill in a prechewed mouthful of food. Even developed a taste for Bayer Aspirin. Used to chew them.
Now I can swallow them but only with a glass of water, and ONLY if no-one is looking at me.
My preteen kid can swallow them but only if it's in a spoonful of cornsyrup.
Hubby thinks we're both nuts! :P
