Lateral mallelous fracture:care, statistics needed.?

Question:
My mother 50y old got this injury climbing down stares, x-rays show some displacement, oblique fracture, I am not sure about stability of the ankle, as doctor din't say any thing about it. we decided to go ahead with conservative approach (doc gave 9/10 chance of proper recovery). She now has short leg fiber glass cast. After manipulation and casting another x-ray was taken, doctor said it's very good if we can maintain that. I want to know the statistics of conservative approach. There are contradictory reports when i googled the same. Can some one advice
1. What kinda of excersises she should do while in the cast
(any specific for position sense improvement)
2. If she get's instability later are there treatments(surgeries) which can fix it. (I read that it can be fixed effectively)
3. How bad instability is for every day activities of a housewife.
4. Is there any position in which she should rest her injured leg during sleep to improve gravity effect on the displacement if any.

Answers:
i broke my lateral malleolous and had 3mm of displacement- i had immediate surgery- a plate and 6 screws so im surprised she didnt-- i had a cast off within a week and started aggressive physio every day-- starting with electroshock treatments- until i could walk-- then they had me doing stabilty exercises like standing on one foot- walking backwards on a treadmill-- using a tension wrap and rotating my ankle using resistance- walking in a pool is good therapy as well- ice and elevation- keep swelling down-- my ankle is better than ever and no problems
