Has anyone had to have their extensor tendons repaired?

Question:
Husband cut through 7 of his extensor tendons in his hand and had to have them repaired (of course). I am trying to get an idea of how long different stages will take. The follow up will not be for a few days.

Answers:
It all depends on the zone of the repairs, the farther the repair from the fingers the faster the healing as the tendons are larger and closer to muscle belly the farther away they are. Typically if he cut all tendons it is located in the wrist region and the hand and wrist will be in a splint for approx 4 weeks before he can do full hand movements in therapy. Make sure he is seen by a qualified Occupational Therapist or PT specializing in Hands, your surgeon should be able to recommend someone and they will put him in a custom made splint usually at the followup visit and instruct him in exercises for the tips of his fingers if the tendon laceration is far enough back on the hand to allow this. The full recovery for this type of laceration is approx 12-15 weeks to get strength restored. Good luck and be sure to ask your therapist any questions about do's and don't s, we are trained to be a link between you and the Dr. and we focus on restoring the function of your hand. Good luck. One thing you can do right now to help with the healing is to lay off caffeine and nicotine to help with a good healing environment.
