What does it mean when you have recurring night sweats?

Question:
I keep the thermostat on 65 during the night to try and prevent these night sweats, but every night they come back. i will wake up drenched in my own sweat and it will be very cold in the room. Any suggestions on how to make this stop?

Answers:
Do you have a blanket on your bed? Try sleeping under just a sheet. If that doesn't work (or you've already tried that) there could be an underlying medical problem. Hormonal fluctuations (such as PMS, menopause, or the less common male version andropause), diabetes, and sleep apnea can all cause this. For diabetes symptoms, check out http://www.diabetes.org/diabetes-symptoms.jsp. For sleep apnea symptoms, check out http://www.sleepdisorderchannel.com/osa/. It could also be something more simple like exercising too close to bedtime.

Other Answers:
You may be experiencing sleep apnea. If your breath is stopped during the night while you sleep, your body will panic and that causes the sweating.

Are you female? Are you in your mid- to late 30s? Could be perimenopause. Menopause is the most common reason. See your Dr.

Could be a few different things. Menopause comes to mind also anxiety or a depression type disorder. I was having night sweats and night mares associated with PTSD.

It means your air-conditioning is broken.

call and ask your doctor about it, if you are of menopause age, this could be hormone related. if not, I would go see an OB/Gyn, just to be safe anyway. they could take some blood tests to check out your hormones and make sure nothing serious is going on. in the mean time, I would suggest only wearing 100% to sleep in and only sleeping on 100% sheets. they absorb your sweat better, which should help you stay cooler.

It doesn't have to be menopause. It could be medications that you are taking, food you are eating, a hormone imbalance, things mentioned already here, and a ton of things not mentioned. If it's affecting your life, see your physician about it. Good luck to you! : )

I would speak to your doctor asap. Don;t want to worry you too muc, but I had night sweats for a very serious condition

Not to freak you out, frequent night sweats are a common symptoms of tuberculosis. This is rare, but you should see a doctor.
