It depends on the Dr. One come med is versed. It relaxes the pt and produces an amensiac effect. It doesn't help pain but you don't remember if you had any. THere are otehr meds, like valium or fentanyl.

Versed

vicodin or hydrocodeine. BE SURE TO HAVE SOMETHING IN YOUR STOMACH OR IT WILL MAKE YOU SICK!! Versed- it causes "conscious sedation"- given IV. You will be conscious of what is happening, but will be so sedated and disoriented that you won't care what is happening. I had an endoscopy about 2 years ago, and it is NO sweat. Very easy procedure.

Their are two anesthestics (on pair and one single) usually given prior to endoscopy. Versed and Demerol is a combination of a very strong sedative/hypnotic (versed) with an opioid (Demerol, for pain an sedation). Some physicians choose instead to give Propofol. This is an anesthetic substance with sedative/hypnotic properties. The benefit of this substance is that there is a quick recovery and little hangover. However, it's stronger and requires closer monitoring (usually by an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthesthetist).
