Lightly scratching a mosquito bite will not cause an infection, even if you have some dirt under your finger nails. Now, if you scratch too hard and damage your skin, then bacteria can get in. A lot of people say that scratching spreads the mosquito bites, but in the 15 years I have spent scratching mosquito bites while backpacking, camping, paddling, and hiking, I can say with 100% certainty that the bites have never spread or gotten infected from scratching them.

this was in the days before neosporing, so the doc put some stuff that stung like hell on it, i think it was merthiolated, or some **** like that. then i had to keep the area gooped up with some bizarre concoction that looked like axle grease---same texture and smell too. maybe it WAS axle grease!

anyway---the mosquito bites finally healed and i got a big yelling at by my parent's because they weren't "made of money" and couldn't be running me to the doctor for being stupid and scratching the bites when they told me not to....
