I walk alot in my job, wear good support shoes, but everyday come home with a swollen left ankle.?

Question:
Im 55, not retaining fluid anywhere..help it hurts. I do soak it in epsom salts, or apply ice any other ideas?

Answers:
If you walk a lot then it may be related to venous insufficiency. Try wearing pressure stockings (you can get a prescription from your doctor) or go to a pharmacy and buy one yourself. Make sure it is for at least 20-30 mm Hg pressure. This would prevent the swelling. Also whenever you are not walking try to put your feet up on a chair or stool if possible.

Other Answers:
I would buy some bengay and rub it on in the morning. prop your feet up during the day when you get a chance, take some tylenol arthritis or else wear support hose. wear flat shoes or small heels and buy some cushions for in your shoes. then when you come home apply ice or a cold foot soak. I never thaught Bengay was so good but I can not do my job without it anymore because I have the same problem.
U may not be retaining water but u could have an inflamed muscle or tissue around the bones or ligaments in your foot u might want to get it looked at by your physician
Wearing compression garments can help prevent or slow down the progression of vein problems and diseases. Compression socks are often prescribed for people who suffer from varicose veins, edema, tired, achy legs or as post-surgery protection. They can also help relieve pain associated with such ailments as diabetes or poor circulation.

Compression socks come in a variety of levels of compressions (measured in millimeters) and are prescribed by a doctor with the individual patient’s specific need in mind. The lowest compression is ideal for people with tired, achy legs. The middle levels assists those with mild varicose veins and edema. Finally, those patients suffering from severe varicose veins, severe edema, lymphatic edema, active venous ulcerations, manifestations of PTS (post-thrombotic syndrome) can benefit from extra firm compression.

Depending upon the situation, compression socks can be purchased over-the counter or must be prescribed by your doctor. Compression socks come in many colors and styles and do not look like the support hose of the past. For people with a more athletic lifestyle, socks are available with padded feet and heels.
