Can you eat Gluten and not feel crappy?

Question:
Every time I eat something with wheat or gluten, I feel really tired and spent. Does anyone else have this problem?

Answers:
Gluten is found in wheat, rye, oats and barley. If you get the same reaction after eating all of those, it's probable that you have Celiac and you should go to a doctor and nutritionist to get it confirmed.

If it's only when you eat wheat, then it may be a wheat allergy. Still tough, but less so.

Unfortunately, there's no cure for either. The only way to get around it is to avoid all foods containing wheat or gluten--like any allergy.

Before you give in to that feeling of dread, here's something to consider. Within 2 weeks of when I stopped eating gluten, my energy doubled, my wits sharpened, my mood improved, and I started losing weight (very slowly, but 18 years of poison takes time to get over.). I miss the ease of eating without worrying what's in the food, but the improvements are stellar.

So, go see a doctor. There are tests they can do to pinpoint what it is you're reacting to. And if results are 'inconclusive,' keep going back. I was iffy and negative on all the 'typical' tests (blood work, endoscopy), but a genetic test confirmed that I have celiac.

Not doing so means risking your long-term health as well as short term discomfort. Celiacs who continue to eat gluten risk cancers, and up their chances of osteoperosis. It's not worth letting this slide.

Good luck, and feel free to ask me more questions if you have any. :)

Other Answers:
I just get very sick, but a gluten free diet is very difficult to do. To be sure it is the gluten causing the problem, you're supposed to go gluten free for 2 weeks.

It's quite possibly gluten intolerance. I have gluten problems related to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), so I've learned to avoid high-gluten foods. Interstingly enough, I can eat the cheaper brands of pasta and breads because the gluten content is lower than in the pricey brands. Try this and see if it helps.
