Anyone else here an EMT?

Question:
We see and deal with some pretty scary stuff. Some peple just aren't grateful now adays... sometimes I wonder if its all worth it. What do you think?

Answers:
My instructor gave me great advice long ago and it defines what we do very well.

"90% of the patients you come in contact with are going to live no matter what. You're there for comfort, monitoring and transportation. 9% of those you contact are going to die no matter what you do. Treat them as best you can and give comfort to their families. It's the 1% of the patients who you deal with whose lives hang in the balance. They will live or die based on what you do or don't do. Those are the moments that stay with you always; the times that you made a difference."

Other Answers:
even if theyre not grateful, youre still helping them so its definitely worth it. i have a few friends who are EMT's.
My wife teaches paramedic and EMT, so I hear a lot. Personally, I couldn't do it. Too much for my weak stomach to handle.
I was b4 I hurt my back , yes it is worth it don't give up
we all have our purpose, but if you expect gratitude... then you are in the wrong business. If it makes you feel warm inside than that should be enough!
Well i wa an EMT for 5 years paramedic for 8 , i have a bad back , which is damn common, some gret memories and some horible nightmares. and since the starting pay for an EMT here is around 8 to 9 bucks an hour , id say your better off getting your nursing degree. Unfrtunately emergency medical personnel are in my opinion the most forgotten servants. We commonly hear about hero cops and hero firefighters, but ive seen men and women save lives on a daily basis go by the wayside. Ill say this and i most certainly mean it. Being an EMT is not a career, you can use it as a stepping stone, otherwise its useless. And 99.9% of EMT's work for private ambulance companies and you spend your day transporting dialysis patients to and from thier appointments. Unfortunately thanks to money grubbing private ambulance companies , we now have turned rescue personnel into taxi drivers for medicare.
my dad used to be. i've heard alot of stories.
you really need people to appreciate you guys more. i respcet what you do. and thanks.
I am a EMT and a paramedic and a pedtriac nurse EMT and paramedic only on call or when they need me don't give it up it is a wonderful job knowing you are saving lifes ..
Being in the medical profession myself, I believe the work all med professionals do is important. Keep up the great work you do!! As for the grateful vs. ungrateful, I've learned there are just some nasty people in this world who will NEVER be happy/grateful for ANYTHING. My motto is "please the ones you can and screw the ones you can't"
