Would like to discontinue taking Oxycontin that is prescribed for my severe back pain.Has anyone been able to?

Question:
Have been on Oxycontin for less than a year and want to get off of it. I would rather put up with a little pain and Vicodin than experience what happens when I am a little late taking my Oxycontin. It scares me to think how I would feel and what I would go through if I ever don't have it available. I have a prescription but want to stop. Has anyone successfully tapered off by themselves or used Librium to ease off it, how much and how long?

Answers:
I would suggest you consult a pain specialist before trying to come off this narcotic on your own. They can give you help, and monitor you during the process. Contact your regular physician for a referral.

Good luck!

oxycontin is a serious drug. you are on the right track. get with your doctor and see if you can try something else. it is just so addictive. i deal with it everytime i come to work. i have seen countless lives ruined because of it. be strong, and the best of luck to you
Oxycontin is a highly addictive narcotic. If you plan on weaning yourself off the narcotic you will need help from you local pain clinc. They will give the needed tools to get through the DT's etc.

After that you will need to learn how to cope with your back pain ie alternative medications, relaxation therapies etc.
Yes, of course people have stopped taking Oxycontin, but because your body is now so physically dependent on it, it will be very hard to "taper off" by yourself. Your doctor may be able to guide you in gradually reducing your dosage. Another alternative is to have your doctor refer you to a pain management clinic, where they can help you gradually learn to manage your pain by other means than medication. (As a person with chronic back pain, I know from personal experience that this is possible.) I would not recommend using Librium, which is another habit-forming drug, to ease off of Oxycontin.

I admire you for wanting to get off Oxycontin, and I wish you the best!
HORRAY for wanting to get off Oxycontin. Talk to your doctor or a pain mangement clinic. My life and my daughters life was turned upside down because of this horrible prescription! It won't be easy but believe me it sure beets what could happen to your future!
If you go off of it by yourself do it slowly don't just stop all at once.
