What causes a morning stiff neck?

Question:
Hi, I have read a few answers, but none address my question. I am curious about the sort one gets from sleeping in a "funny" position. I get this 2-3 times per year, and the stiffness often lasts a few days. What is the anatomic/nuerologic/ physiologic basis of this pain?

Answers:
The first thing when one has a stiff neck is to determine if other symptoms like fever, nausea and sensitivity to light accompany your stiff neck as ruling out Menigitis is number 1.

The fact that you get this 2-3 times per year suggests that it is more likley bad posture IE. working at a computer or sleeping in a wrong position.

Neck pain is usually caused when the muscle supporting the neck become inflamed.
Neck pain that involves bone can be arthritis or ruptured disks.

A trip to x-ray is in order.
Sleeping on the wrong sort of pillow, even the wrong sort of mattress, can do this. Also, sleeping in a position where the flow of blood, etc, is restricted, can cause this.
