How many days does one need to stay in the hospital after hernia surgery?
Question:
Answers:
It all depends on you.
It's common for a hernia repair to be carried out as a day case procedure (you come into hospital in the morning, leave late afternoon), in fit healthy patients.
However, if you have an underlying medical conditon such as diabetes, unstable angina, significant obesity or other such condition, you would need a longer stay. In those cases, you would probably be admitted the day before surgery, and released from hospital the day after, or perhaps a couple of days after, to ensure the surgery, and the anaesthetic drugs, had not made any underlying medical condition worse.
It would also depend to a certain extent what type of hernia repair you had done. If your hernia was a small paraumbilical hernia, for example, you would only need minimal stay, but if your hernia was a huge incisional hernia, with adhesions to underlying organs, this would be a major case and you would need to be in for several days. The type of repair also has an effect on the time of stay. Some hernias are repaired laparoscopically (a few small incisions, and a camera in your abdomen), or open, with either a strong nylon suture, or a nylon type mesh to repair the defect.
Your social circumstances would also be looked into for a day case operation. By this, I mean that you would need a responsible adult at home to act as a carer.
Hope this helps.
I don't even know what that is.. sorry
