Why do you put raw meat on a black eye?

Question:
I don't have one, I've just heard about it.

Answers:
Because it is cold. It is mainly a Hollywood creation. For more information see the following web stie...

Other Answers:
Raw meat is to cool the eye off and to cut the blood flow under the eye. Ice packs work just as well.
sorry, i dont do that.
i think something about the enzymes, or the fact that it's just cold (like a makeshift ice pack).
Good Question....I wish I knew
to keep the swelling down
there's nothing in the meat itself that helps - it's the cold (as the meat is refrigerated) that helps the swelling go down...it's basically a subsitute for an ice-pack if you don't have one.
Maybe someone from San Francisco can answer this one?
it draws out the swelling.
the coldness keeps the swelling down and steak being meat is a solid block of ice in the freezer. it'll take longer to thaw and you can keep it on the eye longer. it really does work and much better than a washcloth with ice in it, trust me i've used it on myself.
its not so much the meat as it is the cold. you can use a bag of frozne veggies to do the trick as well. it reduces the swelling and the pain.
Good and bad idea. Raw beef is supposed to take out the bruise...but on a black eye. What if the beef is contaminated with mad cow...then it gets into your eye.
it is suppose to take the swelling down
