How can I avoid getting a bad pain in my calf muscle??

Question:
Last night while I was asleep, I moved my leg and my calf muscle just twisted somehow and moved to the side of my leg instead of where it should be. why does this happen? About 5-10 minutes later it subsided but I still eel a little pain now.. Is this called a "charlie horse"? It was such a bad pain, I wanted to cry!! How can I avoid this in the future?? I never want to feel that again..

Answers:
what happened to you is called a "CHARLIE HORSE" a really painful leg cramp i get them sometimes. You get them because you are lacking POTASSIUM you can prevent them by eating a banana, or taking a supplement but bananas do the trick the problem is if you eat a banana today you may get a charlie horse tonight but if you continue to eat a banana every day you won't have them starting tommorrow(it takes a day to absorb) also you may be dehydrated drink more water and it will help also don't worry alot of people get them and they suck! so forget about the apple a day theory an banana will do the trick!

Other Answers:
It can be one of the following things: dehydration, calcium deficiency, potassium deficiency or growing pains.

Yes, that is a Charlie Horse.

Get potassium into your system - try eating a banana before bed time. Also, if it goes into that cramp again - you need to stretch your leg into the pain - flex your foot. It will hurt in the short run, but it will relieve it - trust me on this one. Drink more electrolytes. Water or Power aid type drinks, not only before bed but throughout the day. I also heard eating a banana works too. Never tried that one.

The calf pain you are experiencing is fairly normal. The best way to prevent this is to eat more pottassium. Bring on the bananas. When you do get them you need to get out of bed immediately. It is going to hurt, but USE the muscle. Stand up and put weight on the muscle. While this sounds horrid, it does ease the muscle cramp much faster and actually helps prevent it from ripping or tearing. I had a lot of these when I was young and they are a fairly normal part of growing up.

Muscle cramps that aren't a result of very strenuous exercise are usually caused more easily when your body is deficient in potassium.

You can either take a supplement or just eat a banana in the evening. They are rich in potassium.

If considering a supplement, pay strict attention to dosing. Potassium is a vital mineral in the cardio-vascular system and you could endanger your health easily by overdoing it. If you notice the problem recurs, despite potassium supplements, ask your doctor what conditions cause the body to lose potassium.

I am a diabetic, with a systemic yeast infection, and am on potassium supplements. While I had the charlie horses when I was pre-diabetic (hypoglycemic), I might have had the yeast infection, so I am not sure which one of these may cause potassium loss.
