Warfarin, also known as Coumadin is a medication commonly used as an anticoagulant, sometimes referred to as blood-thinning. Coumadin acts by inhibiting Vitamin K (valproic acid) mediated blood clotting factors. If someone is suffering from too much coumadin they may exhibit bruising, blood in the stools or overt bleeding. Vitamin K taken orally (and it is in a lot of common foods) will decrease the effect of coumadin. However, if bleeding is severe, Vitamin K can be given intravenously.
