Is it a problem?
Question:
I don’t do a job that puts strain on them and I don’t do a huge amount of exercise for that to be the reason. So I just want to know if this is just a normal thing or if there could actually be a problem with my hips that I should consult my doctor about?
Answers:
Happy,
Should you see a doctor? Most likely. I would, just in case, since it hurts.
Actually, there could be three or four reasons for your clicking hip(s), all of them related to your ligaments and tendons in the area. Since you don't say just where in the hip the clicking occurs, we'll look at all that I can think of, ok?
You have a big tendon that runs from your hip down the outside of your leg to just below your knee, called the Iliotibial Band. That could be snapping back and forth on your hip joint, since there is a place on the head of your femur as it exits the pelvic joint over which the ITB rides. It can snap over it instead of slide.
There's a pretty big muscle, the Psoas Major, that runs from your spine over the front of your pelvis to your femur, and the psoas tendon on that muscle as it inserts into the front of the femur can snap back and forth as you bend and straighten your leg.
The gluteus medius (the big muscle on the back of your pelvis is the famous gluteus maximus. It has a smaller cousin on the side, the gluteus medius) connects from the top of the side of the iliac crest and inserts into the top of the side of your femur. That, too, can snap back and forth as you move your leg.
The major reason these tendons snap as they sometimes do is because of a lengthening or a weakness in the ligaments of the hip. The femur moves a little laterally, and the tendons pop over the head of the femur or over a bony prominence on it called the Greater Trochanter. But whatever it's called, it hurts.
There are a few treatments for this, none too good, I'm afraid.
First, surgery. That is very invasive and doesn't always work well. The surgeon will try to lengthen the tendons, and that sometimes works. Sometimes not.
Physical therapy. That seems counterintuitive: since movement is painful, wouldn't more movement be more painful? Sometimes, yes. It might work, but it might not.
Cortisone shots. These relieve the inflammation that makes the snapping worse, but it isn't a cure, a permanent treatment. Like chiropractic, you have to keep going back for more.
Prolotherapy. This is injecting an irritant into the joint at the site of the troublesome tendon(s). It may take several injections. This irritant slightly damages the tendon or ligament, which the body then repairs, making it stronger than it was before. This might work sometimes, but trials and proofs are lacking, so we don't really know.
Should you see a doctor? Yes.
The best thing to do right now would be to see if you can find an orthopedist who can tell you more about your options, because you have a painful problem that so far doesn't seem to have a good solution. Cortisone shots may be your first try at a cure.
Good luck.
My hips click sometimes if thats what you mean. If it is causing discomfort or concern then see your gp. If he thinks all is fine then at least you and your fiancee have peace of mind.
See your doctor - if only to get some peace of mind!
If it is a regular thing that is causing you pain or discomfort, its worth just checking it out with your doctor. Even if its nothing, it cant hurt to find out.
knack, not sure what you mean there, but your only 22 and you can move your hips in such away that they hurt, or they just do this 'Knack' thing on their own and it hurts. No it is not normal, you have a regular limp, no that is not normal either go see the doctor.
See your GP to put your mind at rest as this could be excess grinding of the hip bone that could lead to arthritis later in life.
See a doc and consult about it!
Maybe something has become disjointed or something else. Doesnt sound like a massive issue however butI would check it out!
Better to check and find no problem, than not to check and find a world of problems!
