If you get stung by a hornet, how can you tell if the stinger is still in?

Question:
My son just got stung by a hornet. I checked for a stinger with a butter knife but I couldn't find one. Could it still be in?

Answers:
Just to let you know Hornets and wasps and Yellow Jackets do not lose their stingers. It is only bees that lose their stinger. Hornets sting continuous and they will not stop. Hornets, Yellow Jackets and wasps stingers are smooth and thats why the sting over and over again. I am allergic to them and the Doctor explained to me that they sting continous and they will not stop. Just watch for breathing incase he is allergic to them and swelling and hives. Use Child Benedryl for the pain and the swelling and also ice it.
I hope this will help.
take a credit card, and scrape it across for a few seconds.
Hornets stingers don't stay in the body like a bee's stinger, your son is fine.
i dont know. not a mother and never been stung by a hornet. but if you are really worried take him to a doctor. its better going to a doctor to know for sure then just worrying about it.
No stinger remains, only bee's loose their stinger after they sting someone.
If he was indeed stung by a wasp or hornet, rather than a bee, then the stinger will not lodge in the skin. It is only a bee that has a barbed stinger that stays in the skin of the vicitm; hornet and wasp stingers are smooth, and do not remain in the skin.
All hornet stings
* are an allergen for people with an allergy to wasp venom - they can suffer anaphylactic shock - a condition which can be fatal, and must be treated immediately (within a few minutes) in hospital, or before.
*the allergy (wasp allergy) is a separate allergy to bee sting allergy.
*contains less volume of venom than a bee sting.
*are primarily for killing insect prey.
*are not evolved to sting vertebrates / mammals - in contrast with a bee sting which is used for defending the nest against vertebrates/mammals (from taking honey).
*are slightly more painful than a typical wasp's due to a large amount - 5% - of acetylcholine .

As in all stinging wasps, hornets can sting multiple times - they do not die after stinging like a worker honey bee (honey bees actually survive when stinging other insects). They can also bite and sting at the same time.
bee's are the ones that loose their stingers..not hornets.. if a bee's stinger is still left in then...get a credit card and scrape across the site....then get a combo of tobacco from a cigarette and spit form a ball and put on site to pull out "bee venom" you son should be just fine
