Tib/fib fracture...anyone fully recover without surgery??
Question:
Answers:
I've never had such a fracture, but have seen many, many in my 36+ years doing x-rays. If the fracture segments are in reasonable position and alignment, you should have no problem with healing well. Our bodies are amazing machines, and repair themselves quiet nicely if the parts are even close to the original positions.
Pins are very useful, sure, and allow for one to be more mobile much faster than a cast, but casting is also an excellent way to maintain fragment position. You should do just fine, if you follow all your doctor's recommendations!
I haven't had the injury either but have done rehab on many who have had the injury and its a risk to not go with the pin despite the advice of the doc. It MAY heal on its own but the only way to tell if it is healing correctly and in alignment is to get regular x-rays done (like every 2 wks). If you allow this to heal on its own and the bones aren't aligned then you will be in pretty bad shape for the rest of your life. If it were me in this situation I would go with the pin. You probably aren't going to be able to afford the physical therapy that you will need but the least you can do is make sure the bone heals properly. The doctors can set up a payment plan for you to help pay for the surgery.
