I've never had one. But I'm only twelve.
But my dad had one last year.
He was on steroids for a bit but they didn't help him very much.
He ended up having to have back surgery and had to retire from the State Police.
Just find a good doctor and talk about all the options that are available for your injury.

I also had two, but in my neck. I took only Motrin, but that didn't help much. What really helped me was physical therapy. I went 3 times a week for a month. They gave me exercises to do every day at home during that month and afterward. I wasn't pain free after the month, but the pain was a lot less and over time went away completely.
Surgery is usually reccommended. Sometimes physical therapy works. My 22-year-old daughter is scheduled to have surgery soon after all other options were ruled out.
Hi Jon..yes, i have herniated discs plus alot more. Get to a spine or back specialist and get an MRI and u might have to go to a pain clinic which i am in. I have scoliosis and had to have my lumber fused..NO FUN! So i am in chronic pain daily and have to take alot of pain meds but i also take alot of vits, supps and excersise as much as possible. GOOD LUCK!!!!!
Not me, but my sister-in-law: surgical extirpation. (The theory is that the disc was damaged during childbirth and then ruptured when she put some stress on two months later.) I remember she was not excited at all to go for surgery, but when it was over she said she felt normal again. She was in hospital for a week and it took her a little over a month to be "back to normal". Nine years and another pregnancy later she has not experienced any back problems since, but she still should avoid straining it, limits exercise to just swimming and gets a massage every week.
