Toenails: How can you tell if you've damaged the matrix permanently?

Question:

I was an idiot and removed my perfectly healthy big toenails (I started off scraping the nails with a pen knife and after a few days, the nail became thin enough for me to peel off; there was no pain). My toes look fine and the cuticles have grown back but I do not see any signs of nails growing on either toe. I think it's been a month.

I understand that toe nails take a year to reach their original size but I'm wondering how long it takes for nails that have been removed to appear. I'm worried I may have damaged the matrix permanently.

PS. Please do not give me a lecture for doing what I did. I regret it and would like some advice on what to do now that it has already been done. Thanks.

iv pulled off more than i can say..

the only ill effect that i can see from years of tearing off finger and toe nails..

is that some of them.. -especially the ones that got tore off over and over again-.. ist aht y nails are alil funny lookin..

one of them has a bubble and one of them is just flat..

i would say that if this is your first time it will grow back fine.. dont make it a habbit tho..

It takes a long time. I damaged then lost a big toenail when someone opened a door on it when I was a teen. I want to say it took a year or two to get back to normal.

i had that hpn to my thumb nail once...freak biking accident...totally ripped off the nail...it grew back completely after about 4 months...but i was also only 8 at the time...and you ppl heal faster than older ppl.no real pain after the initial hurt to my thumb...but i suppose if it doesn't grow back in the next couple of months you should go see a doctor.
