Muscle Relaxers...do they "undo" the effects of ...?
Question:
Answers:
Muscle relaxers won't undo the building of muscle strength.
When you work your muscles, and they feel "tight" that is just a side effect of flexing those muscles, but it doesn't have anything to do with their strengthening.
Muscles strengthen by strands of muscle breaking, and then healing back together stronger than they were before.

However... I have been told that after a resistance training workout, your body will continue to burn calories for 3 days. IF that is true, what is causing that? If it is the residual "tightness" in your muscle that causes that higher calorie burn rate after a workout, I could see how the muscle relaxers might counteract that. But I believe that the reason your body has a higher calorie burn rate for 3 days is because it takes a lot of calories to heal the damaged muscles.
Bottom line, I think you're safe to continue the use of the Soma without worrying about it counteracting the effects of you workouts.
It's not going to undo the effects of your working out. It'll just calm the muscle contractions that cause the pain. Make sure you take care of you. Good luck.
I take Soma myself daily due to my neck (car accident, bulging discs, spur, & muscle spasms along with sciatica) and I try to excercise daily but I hav a hard time with sit ups (neck & back) and other excercises that only make it worse or cause me a lot more pain. Excercise is good, streching, walking and low impact excercise is fine according to my physical therapy theripist. Keep in mind that you have to be doing the right kind of excerise that not only helps you but also does'nt cause more damage. Soma helps but not that much though I've been taking it for years. You can have both just be smart, take the meds and do the right excerise in moderation. Good Luck!!
No.. Muscle strenght is actually strenghting of the muscles.. Just like lifting weights, you tense muscles up to pick up weight, and then relax them just after you put the weight down. it is that type of relaxing...
I assume that your neck feels tight after a while, that is because the muscles are tensed up in an uncontrolled manner, similar to a charlie horse, however it is because of the nerve pain. The muscle relaxer reduces the nerve transmission and lets the muscles relax. It is during the relaxation period that muscles heal and in the case of a workout, strenghten.
UNLESS the side effects of SOMA including something like muscle atropy (losing strenght and tone), then you have nothing to worry about. you will be able to a more even, intense workout while on the soma for treatment of pain, than you would if you stopped taking it.
You might want to talk to your doctor about it, but they might also look at putting you on an anti-inflamatory such as celebrex or something similar.. they really go hand in hand with muscle relaxers, they help each other to be more effective. I have lower back problems and I am on celebrex and when It really acts up, they hit me with toradol (I dont suggest excercising hard on that, you can hurt yourself and not realize it)
