Possible piercing infection?

Question:
Yesterday I got my top cartilage on my ears gauged from an 18g to a 14g. Is it normal for it to hurt really bad? My left ear is red, swollen and very sensitive to the touch. I noticed a little bit of puss coming out, so I cleaned it with some peroxide and put some neosporin on it. The tattoo shop I got it at was really clean, he did a really good job of sterilizing my ear and putting the earring in. But, worried it'll turn into a really bad infection because I've heard some stories of people almost losing an ear over piercing infections. I don't really want to go to the doctors over this if it's minor, but I will if it gets any worse.

My question is: Is it normal to hurt this much? Any suggestions on dealing with it myself? Any over the counter stuff you recommend to keep it clean and dealing with the pain? Is it normal for a tiny bit of puss to come out?

Thanks!

Answers:
yup its gonna hurt cuz its cartilage.

clean it every hour with sea salt and water. make sure its SEA salt and not your typical dinner table salt.

if theres puss its infected soo...the sea salt should help lots!
yuck. post this for all dumb teenagers to read.
yeap --- it will hurt alot but only for a few days --- keep it clean and try not to play with / touch it - will start feeling better in a few days
Sounds like an infection to me. I've had that happen with my cartiladge piercing as well. I did the same thing you did.. peroxide and neosporin. I probably should have gone to the doctor but i was stubborn. Keep on what your doing for a week or so and if its still as irritated, take a trip to the doc.
I say if ur cleaning it everyday and it dont get any better then go to the drs cuz i had my ear perices to but i just took it out cuz it hurt really bad so if it dont get better go to the drs
You really should let a professional look at this and it shouldn't be anybody from the tattoo shop.
ok well it is normal for it to hurt because when i got my ear done it hurt like a little ... well IT HURT ALOT . but u have to make sure u clean it with rubbing alcohole( should have provided u with some) every day or else it will get infected and could take a long time for it to heal. the swelling is alittle different but i doubt it got infected already. so yea clean it really well ...it is really normal that it hurt(it will hurt for a few months :P good luck
Peroxide is good but rubbing alcohol will help as well. The alcohol will start to dry it out. And might help relieve some of the itching if it is itching. It should also help kill the infection, if it doesnt start to get better over the next day or two you better have a doctor look at it.
hmmm.my belly button pussed a lot too, a friend of mine told me that it was just dead cells. I suggest that you clean it like this:
1. Take some distilled water and put salt in it.
2. Soak a cotton ball in the solution
3. Put this on your piercing
4. Use ANOTHER cotton ball to remove any crust or dead skin
5. Put some Triple Antibiotic Ointment on the piercing (It's like neosporin)

Note:
The guy who peirced me said to not touch my peircing without washing my hands or to turn it while it was dry.
Yeah, your ear probably is infected, and what you're already doing w/ neosporin and such is exactly right. Yes, puss is a common sign of infection, not that that's a good thing. Yes, it will hurt and be tender and such. That can't really be helped, other than getting rid of the infection.
My cartilage was infected for a couple months after i got it, but it cleared up... so here's what i recomend doing and such.
Oh, and as for the redness and swelling, it probably isn't because its infected, but just because of the fact that its irritated from being gaged. My advice is, let that subside, then alternate wearing the earing and letting the piercing air out for a few days. Keep putting neosporin and/or peroxide around and - if you can - in the pierced spot. try putting it on your earing, then putting your earing in. Also, try lettting your earing soak in peroxide for a while, that helps to. And when you shower, make sure to towel your ear dry. Moisture will further the infection.
This should probably get rid of it eventually, but if it gets worse at any point, you should see a doctor. They could prescribe some more heavy-duty stuff for your ear. I doubt it'll get to the point that your ear will have to get cut off, so don't sweat it.
puss = infection. i had my cartiledge pierced and had to take it out b/c it would never heal, even after one year. If you have ALOT of swelling or a fever, then it's serious, otherwise try to keep it really clean with neosporin and peroxide. A skin infection turns ugly when you get MRSA. Resistant staph that is unaffected by any OTC products.
