I would suggest your family doctor. Many specialists will not take patients without a referal from your family doctor. Without knowing more, I would not suggest adding heat--or cold. Maybe cartiledge is gone--maybe osteo to the point of a break--maybe inflamation. A doctor would be your best source of information.
Sounds like she may have Arthritis but a proper diagnoses should be done by her doctor. If she does have Arthritis she should try Devils Claw or Glucosamine but it takes time to have any effect and I'm sure her doctor will recommend something else forby supplements.
if she didnt fall or injured her knee then it might be arthritis, both ways i suggest to check with a doctor and having MRI done, i injured my knee yrs ago, and with physio therapy its much btr, adding to this i read alot of natural healing books, and i tried this remedy and worked perfect with me, equal amount of honey and turmeric powder, mix them and keep it in the fridge, tell her to have one small spoon of this mixture up to three times daily, both of the honey and turmeric r inflammatory and antibiotic, it will ease the pain and heal any inflammation, stay away from red meat for at least couple of weeks, have a lot of row tomato, sweet pepper, ginger and Cinnamon, i guarantee u she will feel better, i feel much btr now and i'm a very active woman. my wishes for her to feel better soon.
It may be osteoarthritis, due to her age,and also caused by heavy weight and other occupation/work which causes the cartilage to be "rubbed off". Osteophytic spurs grow; because of the cartilage loss and the osteophytes, this will now cause pain. If it's swollen, it's either rheumatic arthritis or septic arthritis.
Management depends on the type of arthritis, but she's sure to be given a pain reliever. Please see an orthopedic specialist.
