Sprained Ankle?

Question:
I sprained my ankle about 4 weeks ago, and for the least to say it's not getting better. I went to the doctor and they did x-rays and said that it was just a sprain, and gave me an air cast and told me to give it about 3-4 weeks to heal. It gets better and then anytime I walk or do anything it gets worse again (usually close to as bad as it hurt when I injured it). I have been doing strenghtneing excersies (with minimal weight), and I also have been swimming. I also have RSD/CRPS in the same leg and foot that I have the sprained ankle- could this be contributed to the slow healing process? Any suggestions for helping it heal?

Answers:
Well considering you can't get an MRI because of your implant, if you really want another diagnostic test, you can get a CT scan of your ankle and they will be able to assess the soft tissue and see if you did in fact tear anything.
As for what is wrong, because I don't know your full history it is hard to say, you could have an a hairline/stress fracture that didn't show up, you could just be pushing it too hard once you come out of the boot.

If I was treating you, when you came out of the boot, I would have you doing things like ankle pumps and ankle A,B,C's to help you get some strength and ROM back as well as stretching in all 4 planes. I would recommend you ask your doc for a script to go see a PT and see if they can't help you get back to where you were!

Good Luck!
i hate air casts for ankles that are just "sprained". I believe they do worse damage by preventing recovery for the time your in the cast. If it is still bothing you i suggest getting an MRI just to double check that nothing is torn. Also maybe another X-ray to check for stress fractures or hairline fractures that may have been missed. Also ask the doctor for a script to physical therapy. They can help you get movement and strength back in your ankle.
Stay off it and stop working it to hard until it gets better.
Relax ever day with it elevated, wet brown paper bag in apple cider vinegar wrap around ankle and set or lay down with it elevated up until the paper dries. Do this ever day for a week.
Stay of it as much as possible until it heals. If there is something else wrong with the leg maybe you should see the doctor again.

My dear- if I remember you said you are 14 and have a stimulator.. wow!

OK so to the question... I doubt that it would contribute, but it doesnt help the pain at all!

Turn up that stimulator, and elevate the foot. I did that when I broke my toe a month ago.

Hun, I wish you well!
