Concerned about my toenail..Please Help !! Weird thing with my big toe toenail.?

Question:
About a month ago, I looked at my toe because I had some very minor pain right where the base of your toenail grows into the skin. It was bluish in color (like it was bruised) but I don't remember any injury to that area. I am an OR nurse, on my feet full time, and could of hit a stretcher or something -- didn't pay it any attention, it didn't hurt much and pain went away. I had put polish on my toenails. Now - polish wearing off, and noticed what I thought might be a fungus? Yellow and slightly thickening of my toenail. Took off the rest of the polish and the thickening is actually a separation of my toenail from the toenail bed. The separation is where the skin touches the toenail at the base. You can rock the toenail and see the "slit" of separation all along the base. The sides are not fully separated. There is no pain, but it is gross to move the nail.
Will it fall off? Will a new one grow back? Should I try to remove the toenail (still in one piece)? Doc Visit?

Answers:
It will fall off. Don't pull it off if it's still partially attached, it will hurt and bleed everywhere. A new one will grow in, but will take a long time. I pasted this because he is correct, but I hope you didn't damage the cuticle because it can make the new nail grow out weird. Good luck

Sounds like a toenail fungus unless you have dropped something really heavy on your toes and you would have remembered that! I had one and unfortunately the only way to get rid of one is take meds for at least three months. The down fall is usually your insurance doesn't cover it because they actually consider this cosmetic. Can you believe that!? It is freakin gross! You will probably have to have blood monitored while you are on this med because it can effect your liver. Don't bother with any of the stuff over the counter. It will help the symptoms but it doesn't kill the source of the infection. Do you work out at a gym? Usually they are picked up in places like wet areas such as that. Definitely go see a doc or ask one of the docs at your hospital what they think.
Leave the toenail on to protect your toe. The separation will grow off naturally, then healthy nail will grow behind it.
