Surgery & Suboxone Maintenance - Help?

Question:
I am having a surgery under a general anesthetic and am on a high dose of suboxone 4 pills p/day. The surgery is on my leg and is in three days from now. I know that the antagonist in the suboxone is supposed to block other narcotics. I have told my surgeon and anesthesiologist but I am scared that i will be in pain afterwords and nothing will help. Honestly that terrifies me. Any ideas or experiences? Thank you, M

Answers:
If you discussed this with the surgeon and anesthesiologist you should be ok. They will have a plan for you and your pain. My guess is that they will do a femoral nerve block in the leg that is being operated on, or possibly an epidural. Yes, if you are still on the suboxone and are given a narcotic, you will become violently ill. Your doctors know this and will plan your pain management accordingly. Didn't the doctors discuss this with you in detail when you told them you were on suboxone? I would think they would make you aware of whatever they have planned for you. I imagine you can't go off the suboxone because you would need to wean off of it and the surgery is in three days. Sorry I am thinking out loud. : ) But like I said, your doctors have a plan for you ahead of time, you will be ok. I have had both femoral nerve blocks and epidurals for knee surgeries and had good results with both. Good luck to you.
ok you did discuss wit the dr and i amagine if you tell them you DO NOT want to be in pain, they will listen!
