Why can't I sleep at night?

Question:
I've had problems sleeping for a while now, i don't even remember the last time i've gone to bed at a decent hour. On average i don't get to sleep till around 4 or 5am; 3am if im lucky. this problem has effected every part of my life as you can imagine.
i told my doctor about this but she basically dismissed it as if it wasn't important. when i was in school i drank lots of coffee and energy drinks, but since then i have stopped drinking energy drinks and have cut my coffee down to one cup before work.
Im miserable. always tired and drowsy when wake. I use to take tylenol pm but doesn't work for me anymore.

Does anyone have any suggestions or anything that can help?

thank you!

Answers:
i strongly suggest valerian root. it's great at relieving stress and tension! you can get it over the counter and it's a great sleep aid! if you have one of those "racing minds" or "i can't turn my head off no matter how tired i am" then this will definitely help. you can find at your local grocery store in the pharmacy or herbal remedy section. start off taking 500-1000mgs, 30-45 minutes before you go to bed. now you can get this stuff in capsule form and it's 100% safe (my whole family has been taking it for years and our family doctor actually recommended it) however the only downside is that the more potent the brand your taking the stronger the smell. and this stuff smells AWFUL! but it's worth it. within 5-7 days you should notice a definite change in your sleep.

WARNING! i strongly do not suggest that you take Tylenol PM and booze, in any form or combination. the main ingredient in Tylenol PM and Advil pm, or benadryl for that matter is diphenhydramine. here's what happens when you take it:
You can walk into a drugstore and choose from an array of sleep aids, offered without prescription. The main ingredient of over-the-counter sleeping pills is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are generally taken for allergies, but also make you feel very sleepy. Common over-the-counter sleep medications are Sleep-Eze, Sominex, Nytol, and Unison; they contain antihistamines such as:

diphenhydramine hydrochloride,
diphenhydramine citrate, or
doxylamine succinate.
In general, over-the-counter sleep medications are not a good choice because they:

Are not intended for long-term use.
Interfere with mental alertness during the day, so you should avoid driving and other similar tasks. You may also be at risk for falling asleep
Reduce the quality of your sleep by reducing time you spend in deep sleep.
Use over-the-counter sleep medications only for transient or short-term insomnia and in conjunction with changes to your sleeping habits. Be sure to pay attention to your body’s physical response to these sleep medications.

also look at the links on the website i've listed they have some good remedies!

I hope this helps!
i dont know.. hmmmmm... well, i would try lunesta. But talk to you doctor first. And if that does not work, see what other options you have. hope i helped!!
I had the exact same problem. And i also told my dr and she dismissed it but i kept bugging her. she gave me lexapro (for anxiety) and sonata (sleeping pill). it was too much for me. i also tried tylenol and it stopped working too. what i did was take nytol like around 8 pm so it would take full effect by 9pm go to sleep and that way i could get enough sleep and not be to drowsy from the meds in the morning. Hope this helps
try listening to ur (if u have one) iPod or mP3 when u go to bed it works for me.
If you don't want to take an over the counter drug, you might try "rescue sleep" It is natural and non habit forming, unlike most sleep drugs.

It is especially helpful if you are having trouble sleeping due to stress.

My first thought is that you should go to another doctor and ask his or her opinion of your problem. Not getting your sleep is a serious issue and your doctor should have been concerned about it. It seems like you have done your best to solve your problem on your own, and it hasn't worked. It may be that you need a prescription to help you, or there may be an underlying cause that a doctor could help you to figure out. Definitely go seek help elsewhere than just your one doctor, because this IS important.
Could it be possible that you don't know when you are dosing
off and on? I have that trouble myself, but I have interruptions
from two Chihuahuas, who jump on me at night, trying to find
a place to change sleeping areas.
But I also have Sleep Apnea. And a person who has that
has their sleep interrupted more times than you'd imagine.
So that you don't feel you've slept. But you do, but more
fleetingly. So during the day you can easily fall asleep where-
ver you are. At the computer, riding the bus, or even behind
the wheel of a car. It can be a dangerous affliction. But they
do have breathing machines you can be hooked up to at
night, to help you sleep better getting more oxygen into your
lungs so you can find deeper sleep.
You should get another doctor's opinion or a different doct-
or completely. If she's so unconcerned about your health,
then she doesn't need you as her patient. Doctors can be
replaced, thank goodness. And it looks like her day is coming.
are you stressed about something? because i get stressed all the time and i cant sleep worth s***!
