Is universal healthcare possible in the USA?

Anything is 'possible', but universal healthcare is a form of 'socialism' that most Americans don't agree with. Yes its for the good of 'all' but if your father had a heart attack today and needed to get bypass surgery tomorow.would you want to live in Canada or France where it could take a month or more to wait in line for that surgery? Or would you rather be in our country where one day turnaround is typical in life-threating situations. I work in the healthcare industry and what Michael Moore doesn't tell you is that the vast majority of Americans have access to healthcare and they just dont know it. If an extremely poor person goes to a hospital for an illness and they can't pay the bills -- theres a very very good chance that the hospital won't charge them a dime (or very little). Yes if you're very poor and you don't 'need' a drug eluting stent than you probably wont get it...but I dont have a problem with that. I enjoy living in a society where my hard work and determination isnt spent in enormous tax burdons like every country mentioned in the movie 'sicko'. Hospitals are mandated to not ask for proper payment when a person goes to the emergency room and to treat them regardless if they can repay or not. Plus, in a country where obesity is much more common than ever before and people not taking care of themselves -- I dont want to feel like I need to pay for people that are lazy and dont workout and dont eat right and dont take care of themselves. I don't mind handouts for the true poor and the true sick and the true needy -- but the folks that have lived a gluttonous lifestyle and have chainsmoked their whole lives -- do you really want to pay for them to get new lungs or a liver transplant? I really don't, and I feel that most Americans dont either. So to answer your question -- No, I dont think universal healthcare would prevail in the US. People are not willing to pay higher taxes (and believe me, taxes would increase by a ton) and therefore it won't happen.
