Can you move it? If you can move it, it's not broken. If it's swollen, however, it's most likely a sprain. Definitely nota a bruise. Keep it elevated and ice it. Put ice on it for 15 minutes, then take it off for 20 minutes, put it on for another 15, off for 20, etc. Don't walk on it or put pressure on it--stay off your feet as much as possible! If you need to go out anywhere, go to the doctor and have them take a look at it to see if the best idea would be to ace bandage it before being mobile again.
Take Motrin or another kind of ibuprofin every 4-6 hours, and with ice and elevation, it should feel a lot better. Good luck!
If its not black and blue and you can walk on it then your fine otherwise she a doctor
I have broken my ankle in 4 places snowboarding. I have torn all the ligaments in both ankles via basketball. They say that a severe sprain is worse than a break. It sounds like its just that, a severe sprain. I would go get x-rays just in case. When I broke my ankle I had a red circle form around where it first broke. They can give you crutches and an air-cast or brace.
Good Luck!
The only way you can tell for sure if it's a break is getting an x-ray. Usually you will have a lot of swelling, and bruising when you break something, but this can also happen with a sprain. I would elevate your leg (make sure it's above your heart), take some ibuprofen, and use some ice on it and you probably should see the doctor.
