Question:
i have been on oxycodone 10/325 for a long time and now have a tolerance to the drug so i'm not getting the relief. is there anything i can ask my MD for to change or add to the med to help get better. i am on fixed income, no insurance, my dosage is 1 tab every 6 hr with 2 more as needed. i am taking the max amount. could oxyIR be a possible option.
i have spondylosis and injuries from falling from a tractor trailer which worsened my symptoms.

Answers:
It most definitely is time for a change in your meds. Tolerance towards pain medications is not only normal, but it is expected. I'm sure a discussion with your doctor can take care of your dilema, however I don't recommend that you ask for a specific medication, let your doctor handle it himself.
Doctors have to be very careful these days of people seeking pain meds for pleasure, and they get very nervous when you mention a particular type of drug.

You might want to consider some alternatives to the meds. There are accupressure techniques which can help as much or more as drugs (this i know first hand) and also accupuncture and many other therapies.
Tolerance is a known phenomenon. Therefore your doctor should understand that gradually escalating dose of medication may be necessary. If your doctor is not comfortable doing this him/herself you may need to see a specialist.

BTW why is you income fixed. You clearly have the ability to type on a computer, and I bet you have a variety of other things you could do to. Getting a job will likely help you with your self-esteem, which in turn should help with depression and pain.
You can take more of the percocet, you really don't want to take much more than 1g of Tylenol in a 6 hour period though. Depending on your pain level, you may want to talk to your doctor about going on oxycontin, which is like percocet without the 325 mg. of Tylenol, and it's time released. Then he could possibly prescribe something for breakthrough pain. OR, you can try just the oxycodone (generic ingredient in precocet/oxycontin) with no tylenol, and no time-release coating. That way you can take more without worrying too much about tylenol intake.
I think you may want to start looking at alternative treatments as well as new drugs. Only a doctor can look at new pain meds but I would be concerned about a lot of acetometophin you are taking because it can affect your liver if taken too much. My mother had chronic pain from cancer and she had to be moved to oxycontin to control her chronic pain. She was aslo on limited income and on disability.

I would recommend seeing an doctor of osteopathic medicine that practices OMT. An osteopathic doctor will have a D.O. after his name instead of M.D. and specializes in family practice most times. They have the same training and practice the same medicine as an M.D. but also perform a scope of medicine called OMT which goes along your pain medication. D.O.'s are NOT chiropractors. They are regular physicians that also provide another scope of practice and have a slightly different philosophy of medicine including lookign at the "whole person". I am not saying a D.O. will perform OMT on you but he will definitely evaluate you and see if there is any other treatment he can give you alongside pain medication.

I hope this helps. Below is a link to what OMT is for you to look at.
There is no medicine for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acupuncture is the only treatment available.
Pl try. Pain killers kill the patient and not the pain.

Pain management is alot better than pain medicine. Those oxycodone you are taking are very addicting.A you say that you are having an intolerance to the drug,so you will need stronger ones. This is nearly the end of the pain meds, next to morphine. And then what will you do when you need real pain meds when you are aging. They won't be able to help you because you are on a high dosage of pain meds, now. If you can sit at a computer, then you can work. You can get a job at where they sit at computers adding data, there are possiblilties and options out there.I would say to you to talk to your doctor about pain management. They send you to councillors,rehabitlition,ange... management, but first you will have to get off of the oxy's.They are opiods, very addictiing and you always need a higher dose.Do you always want to spend all your time looking for the drug.Searching for more.I pray that you get help with this as you have a long, hard road ahead.YOu are in my prayers.
