Is it possible to cause permanent damage to an arm by having it asleep for too long?

Question:
I have a habbit of sleeping on my right side with my arm under me. I don't move at all while I'm sleeping. I ussually wake up every couple of hours or so, roll over and go back to sleep. Alot of times when I wake up my arm is beyond that tingling sleep feeling. It's cold and completely numb. I can't even move a single finger. Ussually takes a couple of mins of constantly tryin to wiggle my fingers before anything happens. After all that is when I start getting that tingle and pain that comes with havin an arm or leg fall asleep.

Answers:
The tingle is a sign that circulation is being cut off.

So YES, it can cause permanent damage
When your limbs "fall asleep" you are actually cutting off the blood circulation to that limb for a period of time. That is why it goes numb. Your nerves are not getting the oxygen they need. You can severely damage your limbs if it is done too long.
i'd say yes, definitely go to the doc's if you smell something funny coming from your arm =)
Wow, great Question ....I think not... for instance when a person is in a coma they come out and sometimes they can walk right away and talk and so on.. those are muscles also.. and will go to sleep and or can be like in that state without any knowledge of the person.. but you strike interesting point.. you have knowledge of it.. you actually sense the feeling and then now you have sensed it now and then as you stated... so I gather you have blood circulation problem.. get it checked out... peace unto you I get that once in a while but it all goes away as fast as it comes... if you get more than that kind of effect then something should be checked.. your blood or your food intake nutrition and so on... peace
i'm not claiming to be a medical provider or anything but i've heard of this thing called deep vein thrombosis...which basically means a blood clot in deep vein. I know this commonly happens in legs, which have more deep veins than say arms. I also know that you are more likely to experience this if you are out of shape (have poor blood circulation) and spend a lot of time sedentary. Dick Cheney got it in his legs when he spent a few days doing a world tour...spending half that time on an airplane. But you are probably young and fit and he is fat and out of shape. Even in his case...i dont think he has any permanent damage. Also, you tend to move around in your sleep so it doesn't last that long. So to answer your question I think yes its possible but highly unlikely.
NO, blood is being cut off, but not enough blood for your nerves, or tissue to die, if you were asleep for 8 hours, and slept on it for 8 hours, you would wake up, and it would tingle and thats it, if it were possible, many people would need amputations, a tourniquet would cut off circulation completely, which would lead to your arm or whatever limp is below it to die, but sleeping on it will not. Blood clots could potentially kill you, but you wouldnt get a clot from sleeping on your arm, so no, you wouldn't be put at risk because you sleep on your arm, dont let people scare you.
I sleep on my right side with back of my right hand against my left cheek.
This does happen to me.
I don't turn when i'm asleep.
I have a pinched nerve and neck problems and numbness and tingling in my hands and pain down my arm doing daily things.

When this happens at night, it's frightening, and it's strange and hurts.

What do I do that helps me?
****** this sounds crazy ******************************... I set my alarm (a quiet one, with music) for about 90 minutes so I can flip over, i have several alarm clocks that run on a AA battery and i set them all 4 of them to avoid the dead arm syndrom.

I also find that using a wonderful pillow which i do not sell, or profit from, but would have paid 100 dollars a night to sleep on when my arm and neck went out on me.... it's called the Tempru-pedic neck pillow. I like the 4 inch. it keeps you on your side, your shoulder drops down off the pillow and viola, you will have the best nights sleep in a long time.

My entire family now sleeps on these pillows.
I bought mine on ebay and got a king size, but a standard will be fine, but a king is the best!!
it's so worth the 100 dollars you spend.

A wonderful pillow---

i know setting an alarm sounds crazy, but it's no more alarming than waking up with numbness and tingling!
AND pain.

I went to the doctor and had an MRI and have disk problems in my neck that pinch the nerves, so perhaps the way u are sleeping is pinching the nerves. Physical therapy and posture correction helped me greatly.

i lost the feeling AND movement in my left arm for 2 yrs, and it took 2 years and with the use of that tempru-pedic pillow I am able to use my arm, feel, and move it!! thank goodness.
Do talk to your doctor, numbness and tingling aren't normal.

good luck and if you don't like your pillow i willl personally buy it from you!

im me for more neck issues, i have studied a lot on the issue since 1996.
