My toenail turned black and has suddenly fallen off.?

Question:
A couple of days ago, I looked down at my toe to see that part of it had turned black. I wasn't particularly worried, so I left it alone for a while.

Two days ago, I looked at my nail again to see that it was wobbily and about to fall off. It did, along with some of my skin.

I did not at any point stub my toe, or if I did I didn't notice it or feel any pain. I'm actually becoming quite worried and would like to know exactly whats going on.

Help?

Answers:
I'm assuming you're a runner or hiker... the toe is referred to as runner's toe. It's caused by the friction of your toenail rubbing against the top of your foot, thus creating a blister under your toe, causing pressure and it coming off. (Yikes, but it's not as bad as it sounds.) Attached is a great article about it.

Don't worry about it, and contrary to what a previous poster had suggested, don't bother going to a doctor, he (or she) would just reiterate the below information.

Best of luck,

Adam
GO TO A DOCTOR DUDE!!
Your toenail has had pressure
or stress on it (at some point) that was hard enough to injure the nail.
Best choice is to soak it each night in warm water, keep it clean, and you will grow a new nail. It won't be as pretty asthe original one, but you WILL get a nail.
Please investigate carefully
to find out why that toenail
was stressed.
The other possibility is that
you have diabetes and it is
advanced and beginning to
show up in your feet.
