Ultrasound found lump under thyroid?

Question:
well my dad. he has said for about that last four or five years that he feels the presence of a lump in his throat. some days it comes on pretty bad, some days its gone completely. he rarely has any trouble swollowing food. like corn chips sometimes do. he never has any blood in his spit, he has not lost any weight but he went to the doctor and they found a small lump under thyroid on an ultrasound. the doctor didnt even know why he went into the ultrasound and was so supriesed to find the lump UNDER THE THYROID. he still told him not really to worry, but they are going to do a catscan just in case, he hasnt even set a date yet. my dad is 50 and has acid refulux pretty bad, he has hernias. he has all the symptoms of gerd like the acid, the mucis in stuff, they differences in the days and dependancies on what he eats. he doesnt really feel bad. you think that if it was cancer that he would feel bad of having a bad lump for over a year. it really isnt getting much worse. its not cancer

Answers:
This could be a benign cyst and nothing serious. Do your best not to worry. It would be a good idea for your father to have a CAT scan, so that the doctors can rule out anything that might be serious. it would be best for his stomach problems if he stopped eating fried foods, fatty foods, spicy foods, junk food and caffeine.
They should do the cat scan then maybe a biopsy and see what it is.
like always he should see a doctor they might suggust a biospy or the procedure where they put a light sourse down his throut to see the problem.Tell him to go check it out dont put off things like that.
I want to start this off by saying - I do not want to worry you...however - the symptoms you are talking about are very similar to what I went thru.I had a lump as well "under & on my thyroid". I did not really have pain but sometimes a sore or irratable feeling in my throat. I noticed that I started putting on weight and my eating habits and exercise were the same. I was tired alot. At first I chalked it up to getting older - but I am not old - only 32. So, I went to the doc - they did the ultrasound, then they did a cat scan and had me swallow an iodine tablet so that I would glow in the dark basically - then it was discovered that it was full blown cancer of the thyroid. I was scared to death but had faith.
The surgery took about 8 hours, the recovery a little longer cuz I dont do well with anethesia. It has been a few years now and I take thryoid replacement and feel better than ever.
My advice to you is to make sure that you have an excellent surgeon. it is scary but this is one of the cancers that is the easiest to treat. Oh, they gave me a few radiation pills after the surgery too but never chemo.
Wish you luck and positive thoughts. Your Dad will be fine with you caring as you do for him
take care
