Is resting really the same as getting sleep?

Question:
When I was little my mum used to say I had to lay in bed even if I couldn't sleep, because resting is the same as sleeping. Is this true?

Answers:
No you need REM - rapid eye movement or dream sleep, to retain your sanity.
No. When you rest you don't regain energy you just feel refreshed when you wake up. Its mostly good for clearing headaches and other pains. When you sleep your body energizes itself ready for another full day. Always try and have sleep not rests. It takes 6 hours at the least for it to be counted as sleep.
Resting is not the same as sleeping. Resting will help your body to calm down, but it cannot give you the restorative benefits of sleep. When you sleep your body goes into a state of repair.
Resting and sleeping are different. You could be awake sitting in a chair watching TV while resting. When you're sleeping, your brain activity and consciousness changes. Your 'brain waves' change their patterns. When you are asleep, there is non-REM (Rapid Eye Movement) and REM sleep. REM sleep is the deepest, most regenerative, and important part of the sleep cycle. So far as I know, you can only have REM sleep and dreaming while sleeping.
If you are always on the go, then resting is as good as sleeping?? Resting is a way of stopping your body from constant motion and re-charging your battery (so to speak) so you can feel more motivated?

Am always in need of a lil siesta when feel worn out and have still lots more to do!! Kinda keeps me goin'!

I hope so ive tossed and turned for four hours now and have to get up for work in three.
You Mom was talking about the social need to be in your bedroom at the same time as others. Many social games are played using role playing. As far as the health of sleep needs resting is not the same unless it is intercourse. Then the body can go the next day as though you were really asleep.
she just wanted time to do the house work and yes when you are little you need more sleep or you will get ratty
