Why do I have to deal with pain?

Question:
This isn't much of a question, but I'm 14, and have Complex Regional Pain Syndrome/Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy, and even though I have been able to find some relief it's still so hard to deal with all of the pain. Why was I the one chosen to deal with the pain? Does anybody else have chronic pain, and have you had it from a young age?

Answers:
I'm so sorry that you have to deal with this hun. I'm glad that you get some relief, but I think that with CRPS, even with some relief, you can still be in worse pain than most other people can imagine. Try not to think along the lines of you having been 'chosen' to deal with the pain...the 'why me' lines of thought make you feel more miserable and stressed about everything, and that just makes your pain seem worse. I try very hard to focus on the few positives that exist, like that having this pain every day makes me see the world differently and hopefully have more empathy for other people in bad situations.

I'm 22 and have had CRaPS since I was 14. Mine is one of the worst cases my pain dr (a neurologist) has ever seen and is complicated by bad dystonia & contractures. I've been on the medication merry-go-round, had sympathetic blocks, got the SCS, tried botox for the dystonia and still can't walk 5 steps without crutches so I know where you're coming from. If you want to vent to someone, please feel free to email me. I'll also send you the details of a very good online CRPS group in case you're interested.

Take care :)
The thing is HUN - you do not have to DEAL with the pain. I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE FEELING , I UNDERSTAND.

You just need to be able to find the RIGHT meds to control the Pain.

I dont know what you have been given, but I can imagine A LOT of meds. when you are a little bit older maybe your doctor will and can do a pain pump implant and a spinal column stimulator. I have RSD/ Chronic Pain, etc and IT hurts sooo much and once you get into a routine and get the meds balanced - you will do much better.

What we have to realize is that there are many things that we NEED to do for ourselves too. I came up with my own list..
I am workig on organzing them better - but I can tell you that -because I have done this-- It is a daily reminder:

READ IT EVERY DAY WHEN YOU FEEL YOUR LOWEST.
1. Keep track of when and what causes flair ups, and what we did to try and ease the pain.
2. Make sure we maintain a proper diet and weight so that it doesnt exasperate the symptoms we are feeling.
3. . Make a list of medications and keep close track of what has helped you and what has not
4. A good thing to do is EDUCATE yourself in the treatments of chronic pain.
5. Stay active regardless of pain. I have found that POOL therapy is about the ONLY thing that makes me feel better. I spend as much time as I can in the water. I wish I could move my computer to the POOL lol,
6, Join a Chronic Pain group and talk about it.. you may find that someone is going thru the same as you and what they are doing will help.
7. Keep your head up and try not to get to depressed. Its rough , but a positive attitude is always best.. Here is what keeps me going.. I alway think that "no matter how bad I feel, there is always someone Younger and in much more pain then myself. I need to be thankful that I have today!
8. Read a good book- ie #1 The Bible
9 LAUGH Joel Goodman JEST FOR THE HEALTH OF IT
(try http://www.humorproject.com/index.php)...
Sourcebook:

Keep yourself involved- do NOT pull away from activities, once you start using the excuse "I dont feel good, It is SOOOO hard at times to get back into it and you will become very depressed and not help matters.

If Dr suggests Physical therapy:
Here are some things that may be suggested:
Office treatments:

!. heat,
2. E-stim
3. Ultra-sound
all of these promote healing, and the Physical therapist will move the joints for you. it can be miserable so be sure and make sure u time your meds for shortly after treatment or before. whatever doesnot make u sleepy take before.
Ask for some creme - that has "lidocaine, ketoprofen and baclofen to rub inot painful areas afterwards..
--Lidocaine patches help too.
And stay hydrated. get lots of rest!

ON AND ON

MOST OF ALL - KEEP YOUR CHIN UP..
i ask myself every day - WHY me, but why not me, there is a reason for everything, and you were not singled out on purpose..

I would like to know, can you tell me... did you have an injury when you were younger? or have you always had this?

There are very many people with chronic pain. - Mine developed because of a failed back surgery.. I was fine, finishing MY MASTERS in Nursing school had 1 semester left.. working as a Nurses aid, and WHAM. one wrong move and it was all gone.surgery left me unable to walk- and having to self cath..for the past 15 yrs, I have had to learn to walk all over again, and deal with all of this... (mostly on my own.) because like you feel .. hardly anyone wants to stick around..

But I am doing OK and I feel much better then I did a Yr ago!
It took 14 yrs, but finally the dr came up with a solution for me and God Bless HIM! :) Life is good.
All I hope to accomplish is to help one other person not have to deal with sooo much . (

God Bless, Good luck and let's talk! K

"anyone wanna start a group with me?" I am starting one now... will have it on profile..
I am constantly in pain, but not because of a disease, I'm just always in pain. This has been going on since 10, and I'm 17. That's pretty bad considering I don't have a disease. There's the pain in my sides, sometimes in my chest, usually in my hands and feet, legs and arms. Stinging and ripping type pain. You'll get over it as you realize it's never going away. I've numbed over for the most part and don't take anything for it unless my girlfriend makes me.
Hello sweetheart, I'm really sorry that you have to suffer that, You're not alone on this even though it may seem like that. there's a lot of people who suffer in this world. My husband, he has chronicle lower back pain, he live with pain every single day. Sense he got out of the ARMY. He may not be as young as you are but still he has lost a lot of his youth in the last 7 years. We've been married for 14 years and have 2 kids, and the worst part it's not the pain but not been able to play with your kids, they have to understand that daddy can't play like others kid's daddy's. I feel sometimes that I lost my husband in the army. He has 3 surgery and it keep getting worst, and he takes 14 pills every day and nothing works. You know I have never ever heard him complain not once. People ask him often How does he feel and he smile and say well I'm alive so I'm OK. So next time the pain gets to you Just be brave and strong, you're young ,THERE'S A LOT YOU STILL CAN DO IN LIFE. God help you honey, from the bottom of my heart.
Anyone dealing with a problem, be it chronic pain, death of a loved one, financial pressure, a flat tire... most of the time, 'why me??' comes along. It's human nature, and part of our thought process as well as the grieving process that you go through to some degree with problems (although probably not so much for flat tires :P ) Thousands of other people deal with chronic pain. I do too, why me? Well... *shrugs* why not me? That doesn't diminish your pain, I know.

I've dealt with chronic knee pain since I was 16 (I'm 34 now and it won't ever go away.) I also have chronic back pain (4 years now, not looking like it's going away any time soon either.)

What I'm trying to say is that no you aren't alone, and for an answer to 'why me?' well, there probably isn't one. I know it's hard, and I'm sure it seems especially hard to you at your age. I know, it's not fun when all your friends are out running, playing, doing sports, having a good time and you can't do it because you hurt. They don't understand because chronic pain is something that you don't understand fully unless you've dealt with it.

I don't know what your beliefs are, I'm a christian, and when I say 'why me?' the scripture that comes to mind is: "That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for he maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust." Matthew 5:45. To me it means, we live in a 'fallen' world and stuff happens. It's not just the righteous that get the good stuff, and it's not just the wicked that get the problems. I'm sorry that you have to deal with this, especially at your age. You weren't "chosen" to deal with this, it just happened and it just happened to be you it happened to. I hope you get better and I hope it happens soon. I'll keep you in prayer.
I've dealt with chronic pain for many years, but not from a very young age like yourself. I can understand you wondering why this is something you have to deal with but everyone has to deal with something, and this is just the hand you've been dealt.
Try to keep positive and as corny as it sounds, remember to look at the bright side of things in your life. Do you have a roof over your head? Do you have food to eat every day? Do you have friends and family? I'll assume your answer to all of these is yes, not everyone can say the same.
Pain can be a very difficult thing to deal with but there are remedies and techniques that can help. Keep looking for what helps you the most and never lose hope that somehow, someway your pain will be diminished someday. You never know what's around the corner...hang in there and don't let it destroy your outlook on life.
You are definitely not the only one. I have been in severe pain since I was 4 years old. I just recently at age 25 got diagnosed as having fibromyalgia. The frustrating thing about fibro is that nobody has a cure or even a treatment that works on everybody. So, I still am dealing with the pain. It's very frustrating. I know what you're going through. At your age I can remember going to school in pain and everybody kept either telling me I was a hypochondriac or saying that it was growing pains. Trust me, growing pains don't hurt THAT bad. Just remember, there are a lot of people like you. You can also look up some groups on the internet to talk to people that have your disease. It helps me a little bit to be able to swap stories with other people.
