My daughter fell of a bike today and has a very nasty bruise. The leg is swollen should I take her to hospital

Question:
My daughter fell and has a very nasty deep blue/black bruise on her inner thigh, the skin was slightly broken and swelled up quite a bit. She can still walk on her leg but the swelling hasn't gone down. What are the chances of her getting a blood clot? Should I take her to hospital just to be on the safe side or do you think she could wait and see the GP in the morning?

Answers:
With deep thigh bruise, problems from blood clots are possible, but unlikely, unless the child has a clotting disorder. Risks from clotting are much higher if there was a compound fracture, or if the injury were closer to the ankle.

Usually, complications from bruises are the caused by bleeding, not clotting. With thigh bruises, sometimes blood pools deep in the muscles, and the fluid needs to be drained for proper healing. If it were me, I would elevate the leg and use ice, and not go to the doctor unless i suspected a fracture or if anything else seemed different from a typical bruise.

When in doubt, its always safer to go to the doctor. Maybe there is a walk-in doctor office somewhere nearby?
Put ice on it to take the swelling down but make sure you take her to the GP tomorrow. If it's her knee she could have broken something and still be able to walk. If not it's probably just a bad bruise or sprain.

Either way put an ice pack on it to take the swelling down.
Either one is fine, but if something happens overnight, then you should take her to the hospital. Otherwise the GP would probably be better and cost much less. Just be sure that you get her checked out though.
trust your gut, it is better to be safe than sorry
I would take her to the hospital! It could be broken and it would be better to get it looked at immediately. I mean she could at least get some pain killers..poor girl
i'd say put some ice on it too. See if the ice makes the swelling go down. If the bruising gets progressively worse...i definitely advise u to take her to the hospital today.
I would go to her doctor or the hospital. You never know. just get the x-rays to see if everything is alright.
Well put ice on it.Wait til tomorrow if the swelling is still there take her to a hospital
