put some ice on it. if it's real bad, get an x-ray at the doc's to find out if a bone is broken.
try capsaicin pain relieving ointments at a pharmacy, no prescription needed.. wrap those cloth bandages around , not too tight, u want blood circulation.
check if its getting purplish or something, it could be broken.
it could just be a sprain.
i remember while playing basketball, the ball used to laand vertically on the tip of my finger and it hurt so bad, i could not move it for 2 days.
well part of the answer lies in how you hurt your hand. however, if you can't move your finger and thumb, it is a good possibility. especially if there's swelling and possibly bruising as well. you should get it checked out. good luck.

Just go to a doctor! It could be sprain or broken bone...but if you're in severe pain, chances are bones are broken.
