If a dr prescribes Ibprohen 600mg how many of the over the counter can I take?
Question:
does that mean I can only take 6 over a 2 day period.
The problem I always have with pain med is that it wears off and I have to wait 24 hours to take more after I have taken the max. But thats only with ibprophen and tylenol.
Answers:
I usually take 3 of the 200 mg tablets for my aches (don't let your kids play football!).
You do have to be very careful...do not take more than the max per day without a Doctor's prescription. Just because medicine is sold over the counter doesn't mean you can pop 'em like candy.
The bottle should also say how many mg in each dose. Just look at the small print on the label, and if they're 200mg pills, then take three. 300mg, then take two, so on. :)
well go and read how many milligrams are in 1 over the counter tablet and take as many as you want up to 600 milligrams.
if a doctor is prescribing it, you go with the doctors instructions over what the bottle says ... the only draw back to taking a bunch of over the counter ones is it can be upsetting to your stomach more than if you got the prescription ones... if you bought the prescription, you would just have one pill that is 600 mg instead of taking how ever many over the counter ones it would take to make up 600 mg... just look at the bottle though, if it says they are 200mg tablets, you would be taking three and so on... always go by what your doctor tells you
you can take 600 mgs of the over the counter as directed by your doctor. So if you bought 200 mg tablets you should take three. And if your doctor said take 600 mgs every 6 hours the take three every six hours..It will be the same as if you had the prec. filled
24 hours is one day not 2, you have to be careful taking ibuprofen, or Tylenol as they can cause ulcers. but normally a doctor will prescribe 600 or 800 MG. If he has done this, check what dose the OTC is, usually it is 200 MG. so if you take enough to match the prescription, follow what the prescriptions states for how often you can take that dose.
You need to ask your doctor how often you should take 600mg. In the hospital we give 600mg every 6 hours, but it's only for a couple days. Your doctor should be able to tell you how often, and just as important, for how long. Also, it's a good idea to take them with food, so it doesn't mess up your stomach.
Ok, "do not take more then 6 in a 24 hour period means, between the time you take the first pill, (say midnight) until midnight tomorrow you can't take more then 6 pills.
How many pills you can take also depends on how many miligrams the tablets are. Look on the front of the bottle and it will tell you how many miligrams one tablet is, if there are 200 mg in one tablet..take three.
usually otc ibuprofen tabs come in 200mg, so you should be able to take 3 200mg tabs every 6 to 8 hrs, but make sure you have something on your stomach, food or milk, it will eat at your stomach lining, and make your stomach upset.
There's a reason the directions limit the amount you can or should take.
Aspirin products are blood thinners. You take too many, and you can have bleeding ulcers, you get a bruise and it turns blood red and spreads.
Acetaminephine (sp?) products can, over time, cause liver damage.
Ergo, take no more than directed. I do empathize with you, because I, too, have a very low threshhold of pain and have frequent migraines.
Take no more than 6 in 24 hours (1 day). Not 2 days.
DO NOT take over the counter ibuprophen or Tylenol with this. Your risking damaging your liver and burning a hole in your stomach (ulcers). This stuff is really hard on you so don't take more than instructed if you can help it. Aspirin should be o.k. if you want.as instructed. Call the pharmacist to make sure BEFORE you mix anything OR read the literature that came with the prescription.
you can take however much the dr. prescribed..most of the ibuprofen pills come in 200 mg pills..which means you could take 3 of them at a time..just take it how the doc said to. I take like 10 a day sometimes..its not good to do all the time because it can be bad for your stomach/liver but it is not going to hurt you if you take it as prescribed..
No, 24hrs is one day. 6 a day, space them four hrs apart as needed for pain. That gives you a constant influx of pain meds and taking it every 4hrs means you are not exceeding 6 in ONE day.
you can actually take 800 mlg at a time twice daily and not hurt your liver. so i would break it up like 200 mlg every 2hours and if it dosn't work then throw in tylenol every 4 hours but only the recommended dosage.so you would take 200 mlg at 2oclock of ib then in 2 hours take tylenol then 2 hours take ib ect
instead of taking them all at once, break it up into periods. try taking one every couple of hours. it will probably help to extend the amount of time it will effect you
if the MD prescribed it then it doesnt matter what the bottle says. the bottle should tell you how many mg are in each pill, generally it is 200mg so 3 would be 600mg but you should check the bottle first. ibuprofen and tylenol have those warnings on them because long term high doses can have adverse effects on your liver and kidneys.
They usually come from over the counter as a 200mg pill. Therefore just take three of the over the counter brand to equal 600mg. Never ever take more than 800mg... unless your DR. knows you are taking them.
Ibuprofen OTC is 200mg per tablet. You can take 2 (400mg) every 4 hrs., 3 (600MG) every 6 hrs. or 4(800mg) every 8 hrs. but no more than 2400mg in a 24hr. period. You can't take more than 4 at a time and you CAN'T take them closer together than 8hrs. The largest dose a prescription comes in is 800mg and they are ordered every 8 hrs. Also need to take them with food to stop possible stomach upset. I would try 3 every 6 hrs. at first to see if that helps your pain since 600mg is what was ordered.
If you buy the OTC 200mg, then you would take 3 every six hours. If your doctor suggested it, the directions on the bottle are not what you follow, you follow your doctor's directions.
Depending on your age, as if are you an adult or a child; if you are an adult you can take what most doctors prescribe which is the 4 tabs or 800mg. My doctor prescribes this for adults. He prescribes 400mg to children 11-15 yrs of age.
You can call the doctor's office and a nurse will gladly help you manage your dosage according to your pain and symptoms. As long as you have pain, you should take the ibuprofen with a snack at least so that it doesn't upset your stomach because it is very irritating to some people.
Over the counter Ibuprophen is equal to 200mg per tablet. So 3 tabs equal one 600mg tablet. But you should not be taking the max of a pain medication over an extended period of time without a physician monitoring you. Maybe your physician needs to prescibe something that is a more potent pain medication if you have some kind of chronic pain condition
I still think u should go see a Dr about ur knee/leg. I don't think it is the same thing to take over the counter as prescribed meds...
call ur nurse of ur Dr.. and see what she has to say about this...
perhaps she will call u in something... if u are a regular patient.. otherwise... don't think so...
u could take about 4 tablets to equal 6oo mg... look on ur bottle to be sure.. good luck...
600mg ibuprofen, means u can take 3 advil at a time and it is equivilant to what u are taking with one the doctor prescirbed but make sure this is ok with your doctor as it may not be ok and could cause a terrible stomach upset...
