What can I do to relieve pain in my knees that is safe for long term use?

Question:
I have pain in my knees due to an accident nine years ago. I'm only 23 and I don't want to ruin my body with a lifetime of motrin! I've tried glucosamine and haven't had much luck. Heat helps, but is not practical during the work day. The pain is especially bad when it's cold and during my period. Advice?

Answers:
Oh I feel your pain. I am only 25 and a chronic knee pain sufferer. Have you spoken with a doctor about your pain? If it is bad enough perhaps you may need prescription pain medication. It is highly addictive and causes many side effects, but can help so much if taken properly when needed. I used to take so much ibuprofin and motrin also and it tore up my stomach lining and now I cannot take them at all and I have problems digesting my food. While I am on prescription meds for my pain, I do try to take them as infrequently as I can, so I usually try some home remedies first to see if anything helps. I take hot, hot baths, as hot as I can stand it with epsom salts. I also do a lot of relaxation and deep breathing exercises. I will dim the lights, light a soothing candle and drink some herbal tea. Sometimes it is mind over matter. What about physical therapy? Have you been to therapy? That is also something that many people find beneficial. I go to PT. Some light exercise, especially in a pool could be very beneficial. I also go to an acupuncturist and for deep friction massages, which I find helps temporarily. And as a reach, I even went to a crystal healer. Some gemstones are believed to possess healing powers. I am willing to try anything to alleviate my pain. If you want to talk more or want to know more about anything feel free to e-mail me. Take care!
pain aggravates in cold weather so wear protective cloth in your knees double or triple it.massage your knee even if your in work.you need to lose a bit weight if your a bit heavy to prevent loadshock especially on both knees.excercise a lot, strenghten your quads muscle do it in swimming pool to have less shock on you knees.and take supplement for the bone and meniscus it will help alot
go to a doctor (sports medicine/orthopedic), get an mri, then do whatever they tell you, whether surgery or physical therapy. if you want to keep your knee healthy, why ask us, when you could ask a doctor who is trained to know whats wrong with your knee.
See an orthopedist. They will determine the source of your pain. I had a patella realignment 7 years ago and it worked like a charm. I had a great dr. so I lucked out. Ask others that have had to see a specialist-they should be able to direct you to someone helpful.
